A football academy's first session: a checklist for parents
Prepare the questions and practical arrangements, and give your child a chance to get to know the place without pressure about results.
Before you go
Confirm the branch address, pitch entrance and arrival time, and confirm the session or visit with the academy. An enquiry through a website does not necessarily mean that a place has been reserved for the player.
Ask the academy what clothing or equipment it requires, where guardians should wait, and what the entry and departure arrangements are. If there are requirements related to your child's health or participation, discuss them with the relevant professional and the academy; this guide does not provide medical advice.
Agree on a simple goal
The day's goal can be getting to know the coach, place and session format. Avoid presenting the experience to your child as a test that decides their future. It is normal for them to need questions or time to understand a new activity.
Before leaving, explain who will collect them and who will return with them. If their age and understanding allow, encourage them to tell the responsible adult when they do not understand an instruction or need help.
Quick checklist
- Confirm the time, branch and cost, if any.
- Know the contact person on the session day.
- Review clothing and equipment requirements with the academy.
- Understand collection and drop-off arrangements.
- Ask about photography and any required consents.
- Know the next step after the session, without an unclear commitment.
After the session
Ask your child what they enjoyed and what they did not understand, rather than starting with the number of goals or comparing them with other players. If something is unclear, raise it with the academy before repeating the trial or registering.
Assess the arrangements alongside your child's experience: was the information clear, was communication appropriate, and did the time fit family life? You can collect these observations and compare them with another option without making a final judgment from one snapshot.
