How to be a good football teammate
Contributing to a team includes communication, respect and support, not just goals.
Make communication useful
Call for the ball when available, thank a teammate for a good attempt and give them space to recover from a mistake. If you disagree, speak calmly afterwards or ask the coach for help rather than embarrassing someone in front of the group.
Contribute off the ball
Move to offer a passing option, recover to help defend and listen when the plan is explained. Help a new teammate learn the place and names. These are behaviours you can practise in any position and whatever the score.
A practical example
If a newcomer does not know names, introduce yourself and explain the next activity. When a teammate makes a mistake in a match, offer them a passing option next time instead of blaming them. Any player can make this contribution.
- Encourage a good attempt
- Help a new teammate
- Handle disagreement respectfully
