How to speak with a player having a difficult period in training
Begin with an observation and a question; do not infer a medical or psychological cause from one behaviour.
Choose an appropriate time and setting
Speak calmly in a professional setting consistent with your academy’s child-safeguarding policy. Describe what you noticed without diagnosing: “You seemed less involved today; is there something that would help?” Allow the player to speak without pressure.
Help within your role
An activity adjustment, clearer instruction or suitable guardian contact may help. If a safety or health concern appears, follow the organisation’s referral and reporting process and involve a qualified person. Do not promise absolute secrecy where a child’s protection requires action.
A practical example
If a usually enthusiastic player participates less, try “I noticed you joined in less today; was the instruction clear?” The reason may be simple or require referral. Do not speculate in front of the team or ask for personal disclosure before peers.
- Describe only what you saw
- Listen without jumping to conclusions
- Follow safeguarding procedure for concerns
General educational guidance, not a child assessment, endorsement of a particular academy or promise of an outcome. Confirm current details directly with the relevant organisation and seek qualified help for health, legal or child-safety matters.
