Fair and clear assessment at a youth football trial
A short trial provides limited information; design it to be clear and reviewable.
Explain the process
Tell guardians the aim, activity length, responsible adults, communication route and expected response timing before the trial. Use activities that offer more than one chance to participate; do not treat one moment as a complete judgement.
Document decisions fairly
Record observations against stated criteria and the activity context. Separate the current group’s needs from a player’s worth or future. Protect records from unauthorised access and respond respectfully under the organisation’s policy without promising a professional pathway.
A practical example
If a player arrives late because of travel, do not confuse lateness with playing ability. Record what you observed in the activity they joined, and ensure a chance to demonstrate skills does not depend only on the first five minutes. Apply stated criteria as consistently as possible.
- Explain criteria and response
- Offer multiple chances to participate
- Keep notes private
General educational guidance, not a child assessment, endorsement of a particular academy or promise of an outcome. Confirm current details directly with the relevant organisation and seek qualified help for health, legal or child-safety matters.
